I recently purchased an HP Envy desktop and right away I started experiencing mouse and keyboard freezing. I updated the windows, bios etc but it still takes places. It happens randomly. Sometimes it can happen twice or three times a day with no apparent reason. It doesn’t even let me open the task manager. It’s very frustrating. The only option I’d be left with is that of forcing a hard shutdown from the power button. Anyone that experienced this and managed to find a solution?

Hi @cassar92,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Mouse and keyboard freezing issues can be very frustrating, especially on a new system. Here are some steps to help identify and resolve the problem.
Check for Peripheral Issues
- Try Different Devices: Connect a different mouse and keyboard to your HP Envy desktop to rule out hardware faults with the peripherals.
- Use Different Ports: Test the devices on different USB ports (front and back).
Investigate Drivers
- Update USB Drivers:
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand the Universal Serial Bus Controllers section.
- Right-click on each device and select Update Driver.
- Check for Input Device Updates:
- Update drivers for Mice and other pointing devices and Keyboards in Device Manager.
- Reinstall Drivers:
- Uninstall the current mouse and keyboard drivers, restart your PC, and let Windows reinstall them.
Test for Software Conflicts
- Safe Mode: Boot into Safe Mode to see if the issue persists. If it doesn't, a third-party software or driver might be causing the problem.
- Check Startup Programs:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Go to the Startup tab and disable unnecessary programs.
- Recent Software: If the issue started after installing specific software, uninstall it temporarily.
Run Hardware Diagnostics
- HP Diagnostics Tool:
- Restart your PC and press Esc repeatedly until the Startup menu appears.
- Select System Diagnostics and run the tests for your hardware.
- Check RAM:
- Run a memory diagnostic tool (e.g., Windows Memory Diagnostic) to check for faulty RAM.

Adjust Power Management Settings
- USB Selective Suspend:
- Go to Control Panel > Power Options.
- Click Change plan settings for your active power plan.
- Select Change advanced power settings.
- Expand USB Settings > USB selective suspend setting, and disable it.
- Turn Off Fast Startup:
- Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do.
- Click Change settings that are currently unavailable.
- Uncheck Turn on fast startup, then save changes.
BIOS and Chipset Updates
- Make sure you have installed the latest chipset drivers and BIOS updates from the HP Support website for your model.
Check for Thermal or Power Issues
- If the freezing occurs under load or randomly, it could be thermal throttling or power delivery issues:
- Monitor temperatures using a tool like HWMonitor.
- Ensure the power supply is sufficient for your system's configuration.
Perform a Clean Installation of Windows
If none of the above resolves the issue, a clean installation of Windows might help to eliminate corrupted system files.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
