I am having trouble with an HP Envy desktop Model 795-0137cb. I would like to update the bios but I am unable to boot into windows. I have created a  UEFI diagnostic usb but the directions are unclear how to access it. Following the directions just runs the old diagnostics with no ability to update the bios. Is the USB supposed to be bootable? I cannot boot from it.

Last time I did a BIOS update on a HP product, that was run from INSIDE Windows, not booting from a USB stick.

If your PC is running Win10 or Win11, the default is to have Secure Boot enabled in the UEFI setings, and with that turned on, the PC will simply not "see" any USB sticks to boot from.

The problem is that I cannot get the PC to run Windows 10 or 11. I have reinstalled Windows several times, and after the first reboot to update drivers, which would include a bios update, I get a blue screen. I have used a new SSD. I can't remember the exact error but I think it might be related to an outdated bios. This is a PC with an optane memory 16Gb card in the m.2 slot. I removed it because I thought it might be bad. But the bios does not explicitly allow disabling optane so I am not sure if that might be the problem. I am quite familiar with updating bios from within Windows. I am just wondering if there is a way to do it from USB or even a CD. HP directions say you can update bios from "firmware maintenance" in the diagnostics, but that option does not exist in current diagnostics.

Sorry, I have no experience with Optane -- and had I known it had that, I would not have responded.
