My desktop states no disk has been detected

That’s a tough one—especially when your system suddenly can’t find the disk it’s supposed to boot from. Let’s walk through what might be happening and how to fix it.

🧠 What “No Disk Detected” Usually Means

Your HP desktop is likely showing this error because:

  • The boot disk isn’t properly connected or has failed
  • The BIOS boot order is misconfigured
  • The disk’s boot sector is corrupted
  • A recent update or power surge caused a firmware glitch

🛠️ Step-by-Step Fixes to Try

Check BIOS Boot Order

  • Restart your PC and press F10 repeatedly to enter BIOS
  • Go to the Boot tab and make sure your hard drive is listed first
  • Save changes and exit

Run HP Diagnostics

  • Press Esc at startup, then F2 to open System Diagnostics
  • Run the Hard Drive Test (Quick and Extensive)
  • If the drive fails, it may need to be replaced

Disconnect External Devices

  • Unplug all USB drives, CDs, and external storage
  • Restart the PC—sometimes these confuse the boot process

Try a Hard Power Reset

  • Turn off the PC and unplug it
  • Hold the power button for 15 seconds
  • Plug it back in and power on

Re-seat or Replace the Drive

  • If you're comfortable opening the case, check the SATA cable and power connection to the drive
  • If the drive isn’t spinning or detected, it may need replacing
