I am guessing I didnt do a good enough job verifying compatibility, unless HP does something hardware/software related to block non HP parts. The image is the old and new ram, top is factory while bottom is the new ram. I ordered two of the bottom one to use the full 8G specification.  

Edit: as this website seems to kill photo quality. The characters on the ram read: (top and bottom) 4GB 1Rx16 PC4-2666V-SC0-11
