HP Pavilion All-in-One - 24-xa0125st
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

A power surge damaged my motherboard. I took it to a local UBreakIfix. They said they could not repair it and that I should contact HP. The product is out of warranty. Can it be repaired by HP?

HP has repair but see note**

1) Click on this link -
https://support.hp.com/us-en/contact-hp
2) Select your product type below.
3) Enter the serial of your device.
4) Select the country from the drop-down.
5) Select the chat or get phone number options based on your preferences.
6) Fill the web form and proceed further.

Get an estimate.  If the estimate is more than buying a refurbished system then get the refurb

**You can attach your old drive to a USB adapter to access and save important files.

Did the tech give you any details like bad power, bad monitor, bad memory, etc?  Possibly some parts are good but I would not buy a used motherboard not knowing if there was more problems than just the motherboard.

What are the symptons?

Does the fan spin up?

Any lights blink?

Hear any beeps?

Cursor show up on black screen or is screen totally black?

Thanks.

When you power the machine up, you get 3 long beeps then 4 short ones. After 5 cycles, sometimes an error message occurs for an unsupported adapter. Then the computer powers off again. I replaced the external power supply and cord already, so it must be something internal.

That code is "power failure (crowbar)" which means that the motherboard is getting power but not enough to function

Possibly a bad capacitor or a component has shorted due to overheat or defect.  You should try to eliminate problems

This should be your motherboard https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c06117849

There is a bigger picture here https://www.ebay.com/itm/394059347141?epid=28033830452&hash=item5bbfc474c5:g:P9EAAOSwqW1iOIfw

note that it is not cheap.

Open the system and look inside.  Is there a hard drive attached to the HDD port near the  CPU socket? If so, unplug it.

Remove both ram sticks and put one back in.  See if the system boots up.  If not then swap memory sticks.

The graphics display is a circuit board that attaches at "graphics card connector"  Possibly that PCB is bad and is sucking power.  Alternately the motherboard.

An HP tech shop would be able to swap graphics cards to see if that was the problem.

Get an estimate from HP.  If too high consider buying a refurb and get copy your important files from the HDD or the m.2 MVME using an adapter.

Thanks for the information. It sounds as if I might be throwing away a lot of money trying to fix a two-year old computer.

The problem with the all-in-ones is that they are not easy to take apart. I think I'll just manhandle the casing and pry out the old hard drives. Luckily, most of the files are backed up elsewhere, so if the drives are fried, I won't be too hosed.

I appreciate all your help.

I did try multiple ways of draining the power and plugging it back in. I also purchased a new external power supply on Ebay.  I wish it had worked, but it didn't. As the previous poster said, it seems to be an issue with the power supply to the motherboard on the internal end.

Thanks anyway.

too bad, it works for a lot of users
and it's as simple as one of them mentioned

"hank you. I have had my All in One for over a year. When I was restarting, this happened for the first time ever. Unplugging for one minute and manually restarting solved the annoying problem. "
