Pavilion 500-309
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

A customer brought this system in to us and it will boot into windows, but will not boot into bios. I have pressed f10 at startup and the light on the mnitor flashes red, but will not go into bios. I have changed the uefi settings to boot to the bios and again the monitor light flashes but won;t go into bios. I have moved the jumper to clear the bios and removed the cmos battery to no avail. Lastly, Ireset windows to no avail. I have tried pressing the esc button at startup and the monitor light flahes but will not go into bios.

Welcome to the HP Forums. I would be happy to help you with your HP Pavilion 500-309nd desktop. I understand that you are unable to boot into bios and you have already done some preliminary troubleshooting.

Don't worry though as I have a few steps to determine the issue and find a solution as well,

Perform hard reset.

  • If Windows is open, click Start and then Shutdown.
  • If Windows is not open and the computer has power, press and hold the power button on the computer until the computer shuts off.
  • With the power off, disconnect the power cord from the back of the computer.
  • With the power off and the power cord disconnected, press the power button on the computer for 5 seconds. The power light indicator on or near the power button might turn on briefly but then go out.
  • Reconnect the power cord and turn on the power.
  • Then restart the computer and keep pressing F10 to boot into bios.

Let me know how it goes.

If the issue is resolved and you appreciate my help,

Let me know how you make out.

I tried the method you asked me to try and I still get a black screen when pushing the f10 key, or the esc key. I have also gone into settings and tried to go to the bios by changing the eufi seetings and get a black screen.

Thanks for the super quick reply.

Superb job on trying the different steps to isolate the issue.

  • Remove the hard disc.
  • Restart the computer and keep pressing f10.
  • If you are able to boot into bios, perform bios defaults.
  • Connect the hard disc and restart the computer.

Let me know how it goes.

Cheers.

That did not succeed either. Just a black screen. I have never had this problem before. Very frustrating.
