Hp pavilion hpe h8-1110

I have a pavilion that is a couple years old. It worked fine until recently i was stuck at the prompt: press ESC key for startup menu . My keyboard wouldn't register me pressing the ESC key.  I tried the keyboard on another computer and it worked perfectly fine. But, when i plug it into the pavilion, the keyboard wouldn’t light up.  This also is the same for the mouse.

Thanks

hi

Computer off, disconnect everything except keyboard, / mouse, monitor!
unplug the power plug, and press the on button for at least 30 seconds (the LED on the back of the power supply must go out)
Reconnect the plug, press the power button, and immediately hit the f10 key several times, the bios should open
If not, I'm afraid it's pretty serious!

it didn’t work. So you think that its serious? What I think is happening is that the motherboard isn’t detecting any usb device, and it gets stuck.(the keyboard doesn’t light up either)  Any more suggestions? Thanks for helping though.

Hi @logger_,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

There are several possible reasons why your HP Pavilion desktop may not be recognizing a USB device on startup. Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try.

  • Check the USB ports: Make sure that the USB device is properly plugged into the USB port and that the port is not damaged. Try using a different USB port to see if the issue persists.
  • Check the USB device: Try using the USB device on another computer to see if it works. If it does, the problem is likely with your HP Pavilion desktop.
  • Update USB drivers: Go to the HP website and download the latest USB drivers for your desktop. Install the drivers and restart your computer.
  • Check BIOS settings: Restart your computer and enter the BIOS settings. Look for an option called "USB Legacy Support" or something similar and make sure it is enabled.
  • Reset BIOS settings: If none of the above steps work, try resetting the BIOS settings to their default values. This can usually be done by pressing a specific key (e.g. F2 or Del) during startup to enter the BIOS settings and then finding the option to reset to defaults.

If none of these steps work, it's possible that there is a hardware issue with your computer's USB ports.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thank you so much for that, but it seems its a problem with usb slots. I tried everything you recommended, the peripherals still worked on another laptop. If anyone else has ideas, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again Alden4.
