So I have a z440 and after not using it for a year it will no longer post, there was a 5 beep tone from the board but I have moved the ram to another slot and the beeping has stopped, when it is turned on all fans spin including gpu and psu and has normal fan speed, however nothing appears on the monitor (the monitor is working)

There is a new hdd installed but it does work to my knowledge( i have not tested it will do now). After about 5 mins of nothing happening the fans decide to go full speed and stay there until I turn it off.

Welcome to the HP Forum. Sawadee Krap 🙏 (Hello)!

Good troubleshooting!

HP states, at this Site  (page 91), a five beep POST error code is a memory problem or system board problem.

I can't see a new internal drive installation causing a startup problem. But it would be wise to eliminate this variable.

And I don't think the PC has a short to ground problem. The system should shut down if the power supply is working as expected.

But I have seen faulty CPU memory controllers (replace the CPU) cause this startup symptom.

Have you recently messed around with the CPU? Bent CPU socket pins are also on the table.

Hiya!

thanks for the welcome.

I tried a couple slots and it seemed to be dimm 1-4 that didnt work 5-8 do, this sounds like it could be a motherboard problem.

I have never had the cpu out but i have had the cooler off a long time ago wiped and repasted which sorted a overheating issue and worked afterwards so I doubt that was the issue, and the 5 beep code has stopped but still no post, does this still mean the board could be damaged?

Thanks Again

My pleasure.

Well, I can't pinpoint a CPU memory controller problem vs a MB problem in a Forum.

I'm not sure what's going on. Does the PC POST when you use, known good, HP memory modules in slots 1 through 4 but the PC will not POST when populating memory slots 5 through 8?

Unfortunately, you would have to verify the test memory module or modules you're using is/are good.

Then, if the PC will not POST using, known good, memory in all memory slots you would have to remove the CPU and visually inspect the CPU and the CPU socket.

Now try a different, known good, CPU in your MB and/or try your CPU in a different, known good, MB.

Finally, a continuing no POST condition using: your MB, known good memory, and a good CPU would seem to suggest a MB problem.

Thank you for the advice! I will try all then see if I can find a motherboard replacement

Thank you for for your time

My pleasure.

You might be able to get a replacement MB at eBay.

Check HP Part Surfer to get the MB part number. Or you might find the MB part number affixed to your PC's MB.
