HP Pavilion Gaming Desktop 690-0024
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

So I have had my HP pavilion desktop gaming PC for quite some time link to product specs below
https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-pavilion-gaming-690-0000-pc-series/19769765/model/22909853/d...

This morning when I went to boot on my PC I did things as usual by hitting the power button. I had to go do something quick so when I returned I found it odd my PC had not started. I tried to start it again but nothing no lights or anything. I unplugged the power cord and plugged it in again and tried booting it on again. I got a split second of light and some fans spun but that was it. dead again. I have since gone through everything I could think of or the virtual assistant could suggest and still nothing. I think it may be the power supply but I am unsure of how to test it as it doesn't use the typical 24-pin connector but instead uses a 4-pin connector for the "main atx" and another 4-pin for the "CPU atx" as well as a 7 pin plug with only 6 wires labeled "fan atx." the computer specs are above which also has links to the motherboard and other components. Any help would be tremendous.

Hi

A dead PC can be caused by a bad power supply.

You can try only using a mouse, keyboard, and monitor when starting the PC.

Now systematically reduce the PC to a minimum configuration.

Start the PC after removal of each internal component per below to check for power and a successful boot.

Then disconnect, one at a time:

Front panel USB and card reader

Front panel audio

DVD drive

SSD or HDD

Try a different and working graphics card. Your MB/CPU does not support integrated graphics

Reseat the RAM and try each single stick of RAM in each memory slot. Try different, working and compatible RAM.

It is possible the front panel power switch has problems.

Now you would have to try a different, compatible, power supply.

You are down to a CPU problem or the MB has failed.

Thanks for the reply.
I have tried booting the PC after disconnecting everything aside from the CPU fan, CPU, and m.2 SSD and the results were the same.

I cannot disconnect the front IO of any sort as all of it is integrated into the motherboard.

I had previously upgraded my ram to 2 sticks of 8gb ram to give a new total of 16GB (I had upgraded this over a year ago now) so I placed the original ram back into the machine and tried that also. Same problem.

As for trying with a different GPU, I don't currently have access to one but my motherboard should give me an error code, or at least the lights would stay on if it just didn't have graphics right?

As for the Power switch I had considered that so I tried shorting the pins manually with the same results.

I would try another power supply but the power delivery to this motherboard is very proprietary so I don't have any other PSUs that would be of the correct design. I also haven't been able to find any way to manually test the power supply as it is so unique there is no documentation on how to do it.

Here is a link to the motherboards page so you can see what I mean: https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-pavilion-gaming-690-0000-pc-series/19769765/model/22909853/d...

I have already referenced a link to my PC page detailing the rest of the system in the first message here.

Any addition ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Hi

My pleasure. You have covered all troubleshooting options 👍 except for the following.

You would need to try a different power supply, a different CPU, and then it looks like you have a MB problem.

I have nothing else to suggest.

Ok, thanks for the help. If I have to purchase a new motherboard or power supply I will probably just switch to an all-new motherboard that doesn't use proprietary connectors. I could then just take all my components off this board and put them in a new one.

Would there be any motherboards I could purchase that would be of a newer gen (like 7th or 9th) that would still run my CPU while allowing me to upgrade my CPU later to a more modern one?

I already have access to a case that will fit whatever so that is of no concern to me.  Thanks for any help you can provide.

Hi

Per HP your PC has a Ryzen 5 2400G https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c06124756

Ryzen 2000-series CPUs, which includes the Ryzen 5 2400G, are compatible with all 300 and 400-series consumer chipsets. Supported chipsets include the X470B450X370B350, and A320.

I would go with a X470 or a B450 MB. This gives you additional CPU upgrade options.

You will probably need a new Windows activation code. HP uses, non-transferable, OEM product keys.

The fix is very simple:
Unplug the power cable from your laptop.
Locate and remove the battery.
Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds.
Re-insert the battery and plug in your laptop.
Attempt a restart and cross your fingers.

Regards,

Will

So I don't intend to be mean but did you even read the rest of the discussion? because for one I don't even have a laptop.
