ProDesk 400 G1 Mini PC

Hello everyone,

I recently bought a ProDesk 400 G1 Mini PC second-hand to use as a homelab. I updated the BIOS to the latest (2019) update, upgraded the RAM from 8GB to 16GB and installed dual-booted Proxmox and Windows 10 (for BIOS and fw updates).

Ever since i bought it, whenever i boot it by plugging it in (not the button, it works fine that way), it pauses the boot process to tell me that the CPU fan is not detected (even tho it works perfectly, i can change the fan speed in the bios and in the os, it doesn't overheat at all) with the 511 error. Clicking F1 makes it go away, and continues its boot process. I already tried repositioning the connector, cleaning (the exterior, didn't try a deep clean) the fan, CMOS reset, and reseating EVERYTHING (and i mean everything)

As i mentioned before, i use this PC as my homelab, therefore it automatically turns on and off with a smart plug (it still gives me the same error without it). It's kinda problematic since i have to press F1 every time i wake up for it to work. Any ideas? Should i order a replacement fan? Is it a BIOS problem?

Thanks 🙂

The problem is likely the cable, the fan, or where the connector plugs into the power pins.

Have you pressed ESC and tried the bios diagnostics?

Make sure that all 4 wires  connect properly in the socket as shown in two images below

Verify the fan looks like this

examine the fan cables to look for damage especially where they connect to the motor.

I  believe your fan is HP part number 768424-001 but please put your serial number here

and verify the number then google or use ebay

Hey,

Thanks for your answer. I 've tried the bios diagnostics, the mb check said everything was fine, and going to system information than to fan, it says no fan installed. (sorry in advance for the rotated photos)

The wires are connected and soldered properly, so nothing seems wrong with it.

You were right about the fan model number, i'll try to search for it.

Windows says the fan / thermals is working perfectly, so i really don't know what's wrong with it/

Should I order a new one or is it a fw / bios problem?
