did do the video reset you suggested and screen went blank briefly and then came right back, assuming video reset.  My video card indicates it has the latest update based on review in device manager.

Did you have to reboot after the screen reset?  The keyboard must be working for the keys to cause the reset.  Did this fix the problem??

HP releases newer UEFI diagnostics periodically.
When you select F2 during boot you are requesting UEFI diagnostics.
There is an updated diagnostics package here
https://support.hp.com/us-en/help/hp-pc-hardware-diagnostics
Look for the phrase 'issues outside the OS',
Expand the'+'symbol and click the DOWNLOAD button.
The version of the UEFI diagnostics is shown at the left of that DOWNLOAD button.
When you press F2 to run diagnostics please ensure the version is the new one.

Install the new UEFI package.

Reboot, tap ESC and select F2 to run the latest diagnostics. If a failure during diagnostics and under warranty then you can get it fixed.

question:  Do you have NVidia graphics in addition to Intel or just Intel?  if you only have Intel is it the Iris video?

I did not reboot after resetting video.  The 2nd event happened shortly after I did that and the system restarted.  I only have the intel video graphics on this machine.  Will look at the suggestion for diagnostics soon.  Thanks for all your help with this.  Is it possible the video card is bad?

Intel has a support assistant and on occasion it has newer drivers

If you have the intel iris graphics chip then this is the latest driver

Thank you.  I looked at these intel sites and it appears there may be an update there after reviewing my system.  However, they advise against updating my particular graphics card since it is HP OEM configuration and it may cause issues after updating.  It referred me to the HP site and from what I saw there my driver is a newer version than what was offered.  I'm reluctant to make the update from the Intel site due to the messaging.

Question: After resetting the video card earlier, you asked if I rebooted my system.  Is that required?  I didn't do that and the second shutdown event followed shortly after which restarted the system.  I have not had any issue since then so is it possible the reset resolved the issue?  These events have been happening randomly far apart and then close together like this morning so it's difficult to determine if it's resolved until it happens again.

This user solved a similar problem with the IRIS update that was newer than HP. I was just guessing you had IRIS

I was just wondering if the reset got the monitor out of the stuck mode.  When you system locked up did the monitor reset command fix the problem or did you have to reboot to fix it?
