I have an HP Pavilion Desktop 23-q170na.

Every time I press CAPS LOCK a red light at the top right of the keyboard flashes 10 times. What does this signify?

Hi @MalcolmStuart,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The flashing red light on the keyboard of your HP Pavilion Desktop 23, especially when it blinks 10 times, typically indicates a specific hardware error. In HP systems, such blinking patterns often correspond to diagnostic codes that help identify the type of hardware issue present.

For an HP Pavilion Desktop, a red light flashing 10 times could suggest a range of issues, such as.

  1. Power Supply Issue: There might be a problem with the power supply or power delivery to certain components of the desktop.
  2. Memory (RAM) Issue: There could be a problem with the system memory. This might include memory not being properly seated or a failure of the memory module itself.
  3. System Board Failure: A more serious issue could be a failure or fault in the motherboard or a connected component.

Here are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot:

Power Cycle the Computer:

  • Turn off the computer and disconnect it from the power source.
  • Press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power and turn the computer back on.

Check the RAM:

  • Turn off the computer and unplug it.
  • Open the case and reseat the RAM modules by removing and reinserting them.
  • If you have multiple RAM modules, try booting the system with one module at a time to identify if a specific module is faulty.

Disconnect External Devices:

  • Disconnect all external devices (keyboard, mouse, printer, etc.) and try to boot the system. Sometimes external devices can cause conflicts.

Inspect Power Supply:

  • Ensure that all power cables are securely connected and that the power supply is functioning correctly.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
