I got hd error
SMART hard disk error 301
then pc froze...I shut down, restarted, esc'd to diagnostic screen, ran FULL hd diagnosis (8+ hours)
found nothing. Rebooted. Seeemed to run alright except desktop was empty.
selected "show icons" under desktop properties and original deslktop returned.
After a few minutes of using explorer, got same error.
Attempted to reboot and froze with HP logo displayed and spinning dots.

Hi @Jim4764
Welcome to the HP Forum.
Start the PC again. Tap "ESC". Select "F2".
Run system and component tests. Faulty memory, among other hardware problems, can also cause system anomalies. You probably have a HDD failure but causality could be indeterminate.
You either have: a hardware problem or boot loader corruption.
A boot loader problem is a rabbit hole. Very difficult to fix while keeping the current OS installation intact.
A valid 301 error indicates the system drive is failing or has failed.
