OMEN by HP 17-cb0060nr
Microsoft Windows 11

Hello! I just upgraded my SSD to a Samsung 980 Pro (1TB) on an Omen 17 cb000 and got a troubleshoot problem when booting up my computer after installing said SSD, SHORT DST: Warning, I don't know what to do here, everything else works fine, saw on the internet to proceed with Legacy (BIOS) on but am still indecisive on what I should do. Also, I took out the New SSD and placed the old one and it booted up normally so I doubt is any Hard Drive damage. Any advice/help will be helpful thanks.

This is the one I used.  It has a light that flickers with data transfer, the case locks, and the memory stock snaps in so no screw is required.  It can also manage TRIM and is useful as a high speed flash drive using the old memory stick.

What happened to your enclosure?  Are you sure the enclosure is defective?

The Samsung device is failing the short drive self test.  That indicates a problem either with the device or the test.

Your 17-cb0060nr is a Gen3 PCIe system and the Samsung 980 Pro is Gen4.  Supposedly it is backwards compatible and will slow down to run at Gen3 speed.

Possibly it is not recognized by the BIOS that handles the DST and is marked as failing.  Just a guess.

The latest bios on the web site is May 2022

https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/swdetails/omen-by-hp-17-cb0000-laptop-pc/26122176/m...

Possibly the bios can recognized the 980 Pro better.

My recommendation is to return it and get the 970 EVO a Gen3 NVMe.

Actually, the best thing to do is to examine the old chip for the model and part number and get the next largest size

If the old chip has an HP part number then post it here so I can look it up.

Alternately, put it back in and run MSINFO and see if the actually manufacture of the NVME is displayed instead of an HP part number

Thats the HP P/N: L01431-002

S/N: [Personal Information Removed]

P/N: MZVLB512HAJQ-000H1

That’s all the info I got from the old SSD

The HP part number shows this

https://partsurfer.hp.com/partsurfer?searchtext=L01431-002

2280 PM981 PCIe Gen3x4

The PM981 is a re-branded Samsung gen3 device.  It was made for HP

searching amazon https://www.amazon.com/s?k=samsung+981+1tb

there are 1 star reviews for both 970 evo and 980 but the 980 has more 1star and some are mislabeled (fake)

I would go with the 970 EVO

Another option is the HP part L50353-001

This is a $83 pull from an HP workstation https://www.ebay.com/itm/334504122565#vi-desc-maincntr

PM981a is 1tb with manufacturer part number MZVLB1T0HBLR

A new one of MZVLB1T0HBLR cost more https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-MZVLB1T0HBLR-Express-Inspiron-Pression/dp/B0927X89PR?th=1

I would not get a used part unless it could be returned.

Hello, did what you suggested and changed the 980 Pro to a 970 Evo  (1TB) but I am still getting the same results but now when I boot up the computer it doesn’t detect the SSD, any help with that? Should I use Legacy Support?

Bring up the disk manager and initialize the SSD.?

When I installed my WD SN750 I put it in a USB3 enclosure and cloned the old NVMe to the new one and then swapped the new one onto the motherboard.

you may have to reset the CMOS if the system thinks the old 981 is still there

I think you can do the CMOS reset from the keyboard with the Windows key + "V"

The pins where you put in the SSD are damaged, they are off their place. And thanks very much for your help this will fix my problem, I already solved the DST Short Warning, and everything thank you
