HP created an issue with SSD compatibility back in 2018 and it appears it's still not resolved.
I've wasted days trying to upgrade a Pavilion 510-A011A (2020-ish model) from platter to SSD without success.
Going back through the HP and other Forums, Crucial and Samsung SSDs aren't compatible... Yes I've tested both.
It seems HP isn't interested in testing SSDs for compatibility and Crucial and Samsung aren't interested in engaging with HP to get the issue fixed.
So if you get o this post after many days of frustration, the short answer is:
Don't get a Crucial or Samsung SSD.
You can try a WDC Blue or HP branded SSD, but HP won't guarantee they'll work.
My recommended action is to throw away your Pavilion and get another brand , perhaps a generic where they don't force you to use a specific brand of drive.
Good luck in your troubleshooting and getting help.
PS I'm in Australia. HP Support says to send them a Whatsapp ate "ANY TIME" and gives a contact number. The response is "FAILED to SEND" All help given, short of actual assistance. Thanks HP, for nothing!

Thanks @Bill_To.
I found a large number of posts on this and other Forums explaining the same issue going back 5 years.
Having spent until 4 AM on this latest round of trouble-shooting and then wasting further time futily attempting to contact HP Support via their Whatsapp number, I was more than a little upset. As a result and being in need of sleep, I vented at HP and separately to the SSD vendors for not having reported this issue on their own websites.
Apologies if I upset anyone out there on this forum.
Special thanks to Andrew Fox at Pro-Bit Computers in Melbourne for having preceded me in the troubleshooting process and finding the issues 12 months ago. His solution was to purchase a WDC Blue. Some people have added that Patriot and Crucial BX series MAY work. HP don't have a list of compatible drives, so you'll just have to try it and see. Good luck.

Hi @mozzie4
We have discussed this problem before.
Look, I don't understand why HP would preclude installing and successfully using any, specific, manufacturer's 2.5 SATA SSDs. I think it is possible to install any 3.5 inch SATA HDD in your HP PC.
Venting in the Forum will probably not yield positive results. I don't think anyone in this forum can assist.
Opinions or troubleshooting suggestions in this response are provided independently. I am not employed by HP, Inc. or the HP Forum.

I hope this clarifies but feel free to let me know if you have further question.
