Every time I try to boot my computer, I get the message that it is scanning and repairing the (L: ) drive and it takes approximately a whole day to get to 10% complete. Then I leave it overnight and when I wake it up, it either has a blank screen or it has restarted the scan at 0%. I have tried turning it off and on again, but it either goes to the scanning screen or it is just blank. This has been going on for days now and I am at a loss of what to do next.

When you get a new drive, understand that you CAN install Win10 on it, even though your PC did not come with Win10, because it's already been Registered with MS. Just be sure to SKIP the part where it asks for a product key.
Good Luck

Hello;
Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!
I'm guessing this PC did not come with Win10 preinstalled, right?
And, if that is the case, what was installed -- Windows 7?
If it's that old, the most likely cause for the great slowdown is a failing drive -- because when sectors start to go bad, instead of the drive reading hundres of sectors per second, it can spend seconds on each sector -- and that can easily cause a 10-minute scan to last for hours, or even, for days.
If you can, follow the directions in this link for testing your hard drive: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00439024
If that confirms your drive has failed, then you need to replace it. Please report back if that is the case.
We can proceed once you provide the information.
Thanks
