Microsoft Windows 11

I was recently playing a game and my computer as well as the game became extremely stuttery and laggy so I restarted my computer and everything seems to be resolved. I then booted my computer back up and continue to play after about another 10 minutes the issue resumed and my computer was operating at less than an input every couple seconds it was extremely laggy and I couldn't do anything. I reset my computer again and then when it came back up I was met with the message "Secure boot violation. Invalid signature detected. Check secure boot policy in setup." After clicking past this message I was met with the "boot device not found please install an operating system on your hard disk. hard disk 3f0 message. I tried following the guide HP provides at this screen but it proved unsuccessful.

Hi @GOOBRR,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thank you for providing the details. The combination of severe system lag during gaming followed by “Secure Boot Violation – Invalid signature detected” and then “Boot Device Not Found – 3F0” indicates that the system is currently not detecting or booting from the drive containing Windows.

Before making any changes to Windows or Secure Boot, the important first step is to determine whether the storage drive is being detected and whether it passes HP hardware diagnostics.

1. Run HP Hardware Diagnostics

  1. Turn off the computer completely.
  2. Turn it back on and immediately press Esc repeatedly until the Startup Menu appears.
  3. Press F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
  4. Select Component Tests.
  5. Select the Storage or Hard Drive/SSD test available on your system.
  6. Run the Quick Test first.
  7. If the Quick Test passes, run the Extensive Test.

These tests are important because the 3F0 Boot Device Not Found error can occur when the storage drive is not detected or when the drive has a hardware problem.

What the results mean

  • If the storage test fails: note the failure ID and error message. This would indicate a possible storage-drive hardware issue, and the failure ID will be important for further support.
  • If the storage test passes: the drive is responding to the hardware diagnostics, and we can then continue troubleshooting the boot/Windows and Secure Boot issue.
  • If the storage drive is not listed in the diagnostics, this is also significant, as it can indicate that the system is not detecting the drive.

For now, do not reinstall Windows or format the drive, especially if you have important files stored on it.

Run the HP F2 Storage/Hard Drive diagnostics and share the exact test result and any Failure ID shown. That will tell us whether we should focus on the storage hardware or the Windows/Secure Boot startup configuration.

Take care and have an amazing day!
