I woke up to a blue screen error of  "Secure boot violation. Invalid signature detected"  which I guess came courtesy of a windows update or a crash, because I had not turned my PC off.  I checked HP website and there was no BIOS update available for my device running WINDOWS 11.  I have 4 questions:

1) How can this Secure boot violation be resolved?

2) Is this a known issue with the Windows 11 OS or is it an HP issue?

3) Has this issue been addressed in more up to date HP devices?

4) Does anyone know of a "work-around" for this issue?

Hi @teller7,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I Understand your concern about wake up to a blue screen with a “Secure Boot Violation” message , don’t worry let me help you with this.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

  • Did this error appear immediately after a Windows Update, or did it occur randomly after the system was left on overnight?
  • Are you able to access BIOS/UEFI settings when restarting the laptop, or does the error prevent you from entering?

Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:

  • Check BIOS settings: Restart your PC, press Esc or F10 to enter BIOS, and confirm that Secure Boot is enabled and the boot mode is set to UEFI.
  • Clear Secure Boot keys: In BIOS, look for the option to Clear Secure Boot Keys and then Restore Factory Keys. This often resolves signature mismatch issues.
  • Update Windows: Boot into Safe Mode if possible, then check for pending Windows updates. Sometimes Microsoft releases patches to fix Secure Boot signature problems.
  • Disable Secure Boot temporarily: If you need immediate access, you can disable Secure Boot in BIOS. This is not a permanent fix, but it can allow you to boot until a patch or update is applied.
  • Check HP Support Assistant: Even if no BIOS update is listed on the website, HP Support Assistant may detect firmware updates specific to your device.

To address your questions :

  1. Resolution usually involves restoring Secure Boot keys or applying Windows/firmware updates.
  2. This issue is more often linked to Windows Update changes to boot signatures, but it can affect HP systems if the BIOS doesn’t yet have updated keys.
  3. Yes, newer HP devices often ship with updated firmware that reduces the likelihood of this mismatch.
  4. The most common workaround is temporarily disabling Secure Boot until Microsoft or HP provides an update.

I hope this helps.

I'm an HP Employee.
