Hi @Quintin929

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for your patience—it’s understandably frustrating when a brand-new device doesn’t glide through setup as expected.

If your new HP laptop keeps restarting during setup after failing to download updates, the issue is likely tied to a temporary glitch in the Windows update process.

Let’s walk through a clean, guided setup path to get you past this loop and into your desktop.

Step 1: Disconnect from Wi-Fi During Setup

This prevents the system from attempting updates during the initial setup.

  1. Power on the laptop and begin setup.
  2. When you reach the “Let’s connect you to a network” screen, choose “I don’t have internet” or “Skip for now”.
  3. Continue with the setup offline until you reach the desktop.

Once you’re in, we’ll handle updates manually.

Step 2: Manually Install Windows Updates After Setup

  1. Connect to Wi-Fi from the desktop.
  2. Go to Settings > Windows Update.
  3. Click Check for updates.
  4. Allow all updates to download and install.
  5. Restart the laptop when prompted.

If updates fail again, proceed to the next step.

Step 3: Run Windows Update Troubleshooter

  1. Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  2. Find Windows Update and click Run.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to apply any fixes.

Step 4: Free Up Disk Space (if needed)

Sometimes updates fail due to low storage.

  1. Go to Settings > System > Storage.
  2. Click Temporary files and remove unnecessary items like Windows Update Cleanup, Delivery Optimization Files, and Recycle Bin contents.

Step 5: Update Using HP Support Assistant

This ensures your drivers and firmware are current.

  1. Install and open the app.
  2. Select your device and click Updates.
  3. Install all available updates and restart.

Step 6: Optional – Use Windows 11 Installation Assistant

If updates still fail, this tool can refresh the system without erasing your files.

Once you’re through, your laptop should be ready to explore. If you’d like help setting up the HP App, printer, or personalizing your system, I’m here to guide you every step of the way. Let’s make this new device feel like home.
