Tried to reinstall windows but ssd not recognized. I've gone through all the pc hardware diagnostics and ssd appears to be there

Hi @goffo,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

Sorry for the inconvenience caused don’t worry let me help you.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

  • Which HP All-in-One model are you using?
  • When you run HP hardware diagnostics, does the SSD show up under storage tests with a “Passed” status?
  • In BIOS setup, is the SSD listed under boot devices or storage configuration?
  • Did you replace the CMOS battery yourself, and was the BIOS reset afterward?

Troubleshooting steps to try:

  • Check BIOS Settings: Enter BIOS (usually by pressing F10 at startup). Confirm that the SSD is listed and enabled. If not, try resetting BIOS to default settings.
  • Secure Boot & Legacy Mode: Sometimes Windows installation media won’t detect drives if Secure Boot or Legacy mode settings are mismatched. Toggle these options in BIOS and retry.
  • Reseat SSD: If it’s a removable M.2 or SATA SSD, carefully reseat it to ensure proper connection. Loose seating can cause intermittent recognition.
  • Run Storage Test Again: In HP Diagnostics, run the extended storage test. If it passes, the drive is physically fine, and the issue may be firmware or partition-related.
  • Diskpart Check: Boot from Windows installation media, open Command Prompt, and run   diskpart → list disk  , If the SSD appears here, it may just need reformatting or partition repair.
  • BIOS Update: If you haven’t already, update the BIOS from HP’s support website https://support.hp.com/in-en/drivers . A corrupted or outdated BIOS can prevent proper drive detection.

If the SSD is consistently detected in diagnostics but not by Windows setup, that points to a software/firmware mismatch rather than a dead drive.

I hope this helps.

Hi @goffo,

Thanks for your response.

I can imagine how  it must feel to see your SSD show up in diagnostics and BIOS, but not in Windows or Diskpart. You’ve clearly put in a lot of effort already.

If after all this the SSD still doesn’t appear in Diskpart or Windows setup, it could point to a compatibility issue or a failing drive despite diagnostics showing it physically present.
