Hello,

I have had this issue for the last few days and have had trouble solving it. As I start my PC, on the left it says ‘The operating system did not shutdown cleanly. Reconstructing Cache Metadata.’ Then goes to Starting Automatic Repair with a spinning white dotted wheel and a HP symbol. After a minute or so the words ‘Starting Automatic Repair’ disappear and the spinning dots continue. After, it restarts the process from the ‘The operating system did not shutdown cleanly’ part. How should I go about fixing this?

I have tried a memory test and a hard drive check and it has all gone successful. After trying system recovery, the HP symbol and spinning dots appear with ‘Please wait’ and after a few minutes the words ‘please wait’ disappears. After a few minutes of waiting, the whole process restarts from ‘Starting Automatic Repair’. It has been frustrating to troubleshoot so I hope you can help. Thanks.

that error means, one of 2 things, you tripped on the power cord , before doing a full PC start button shut down

or the OS crashed (bingo?)

well step one on any PC is run full diagnostics on said PC, that means to me,. test HDD first.

no PC can run unless the HDD is good and passing SMART tests 100%

the HP.com web site has all the steps you need to run HP Diagnostics. (search it find it do it?)

I never bother with that, unless desperate and never am.

I boot the  linux, demo media (USB stick) and click TRY ME, (demo) and run DISKTEST,

all a 2 minute job , after make the linux media.  (100% safe this is ,it is only DEMO mode)

see it fail here? classic and endless HDD failures common after 5 long years.
