Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Recently I started my computer as usual and proceeded to use it as normal, however suddenly it said 'shutting off' and proceeded to turn off. After this sudden shutdown, I attempted to reboot the computer to no avail. I then unplugged the computer and plugged it back in, and it would start for a few seconds spin everything up and shutdown. This seemed odd to me, and I retried the next day to see if it was temporary, and it worked for an hour or so then shut down. At this point I assumed it was the power supply and purchased a new one. I put the new one in, and sadly same issue! At this point, I assumed it might be the CMOS, and attempted to pluck it out and reinstall it after 5 minutes, this oddly allowed my computer to work again for approximately a hour once again, however it soon crapped out once again. This seemed odd to me, and I thought it was the CMOS battery failing, to which I canabalized my old computers CMOS to no avail. Before finally throwing in the towel, I tried to check each part for failure. I first unplugged the HDD, tried to boot, GPU, tried to boot, then each RAM stick, reboot, and none of this would allow it to run for more than a few seconds.

At this point im lost, I have no idea what the issue might be, anybody know any trick or have any ideas?

Many thanks,

Wolfie

@Wolfie1422,

Good day. A  warm welcome to the Hp community. I reviewed the case and will be happy to assist you. Terrific troubleshooting and great diagnosis of the issue. Kudos to you for that.

  • Was there a recent power outage or surge before this happened for the first time?

It definitely looks like a hardware issue. Let's try these steps:

  • Please run complete hardware diagnostics on the computer from this link:https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-envy-700-200-desktop-pc-series/5399651/model/6739959/documen... (HP PCs - Testing for Hardware Failures
  • Follow instructions from the section "Run the Extensive Test (2 hours or more)" and check.
  • If any component fails, it will give you a failure code. make a note of it.
  • Also if the computer shuts down while running these diagnostics then the issue is hardware related and the computer needs to be repaired.

You could also check in the bios if the computer shuts down. if it shuts down in the bios then the issue is hardware related and the computer needs to be repaired. I am being honest here by keeping your best interest in mind.

Steps to go to the bios:

  • Press Esc key gently several times as soon as you power on the computer.
  • It takes you to the startup menu.
  • Then press the F10 key to go the bios.
  • Leave the computer under observation in the bios for a few hours.
  • If it shuts down, then the computer has a hardware issue.
  • Then press F9 to load setup defaults and select yes and push “enter.”
  • It takes you back to windows.

At this stage, we have deduced correctly that the computer needs to be repaired. I will send you a private message to assist you with the next course of action. Check your forum private message box in the upper right corner next to the bell icon.

Good luck and keep me posted about the developments. If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue and give the post a Kudos for my efforts to help. Thank you and have a great week ahead. 🙂
