There is one last possibility for the USB keyboard to not be giving the correct choices at startup.  I have read that if the keyboard is plugged into the USB 3.0 ports instead of the USB 2.0 ports it might not be recognized properly until Windows loads.  The USB 3.0 drivers are not loaded prior to the OS and therefore pressing any keys to get into the BIOS are not acknowledged.  Try checking that and move the keyboard to a USB 2.0 port.

It is unknown as to why you are getting  the blank monitor or the "no signal" on the way you are starting.

There is something fundamentally wrong with mij combination Desktop/monitor/keyboard, all HP and newly bought. I took my desktop and keyboard to the shop. There, tapping Esc continuously at startup resulted in the Menu I want to see. But when I did the same at home I got the Windows opening screen again. I went back to the shop. They changed the options for me. All I had to do now was start with the Ubuntu DVD in the player and Ubuntu would start from DVD, which it did in the shop. Back home, I started my PC with the DVD in the player. You know what happened? BLACK screen again. I hear the player for a short while but the screen remains black. Since the only difference with the shop is the monitor, I wonder if something is wrong with this newly bought HP monitor 24o. I had to buy a dvi cable for it because they had only included a VGA cable and there is no VGA port on this PC. But then, why does the monitor works with Windows and gives me "no signal" when I try to start from DVD player?

I appreciate the way you come with new suggestions which I can try (I tried USB 2.0 without success), but I am afraid there is some mysterious reason for my PC not to work as I would have expected. I cannot work without Ubuntu, so I really am desperate. All I can do now is go back to my old computer with Vista and Ubuntu installed.

Thanks for having tried to help me. It was really appreciated.

Well, I am out of suggestions.  Perhaps there is a problem with the monitor but it seems you could try another monitor to rule that out.  From what I saw on the support page, that PC has a GeForce GTX 1050 graphics card.  There is a HDMI output port on the card.  You could try that with a TV that has HDMI in, just for a test.

While Windows 10 is running, use the "Advanced Restart" option.

One option will be to "restart now to allow entry to BIOS SETUP or boot from different device" [wildly paraphrased].

Hello Dean,

I finally found out that it is indeed my newly bought monitor HP 24o that is the culprit. Moving the cable up and down suddenly showed me the blue menu screen with BIOS etc. I was able to install Ubuntu, but unfortunately the screen gave me the famous "no signal" again and was all black after a restart. i cannot not figure out why I do get Windows, but everything else (BIOS menu, start from DVD, UEFI firmware settings etc.) give me this black screen most of the time.

I have now decided to contact HP customer service to see if I can get another moitor.

Thanks for your help!
