Hi

Secure boot is needed for W10 I suspect, and the Ubuntu has gone for legacy boot possibly.

So is Windows 10 installed?

Could you go for a later Ubuntu (Ubuntu 17.10 Artful Aardvark will be released on October 19th) and try a 64 bit version?

You may need to change the Secure/Legacy boot in the BIOS.

So a few more details on the system and process of installing may help.

Try the Ubuntu DVD/USB as a live booting OS and check the HDD with Gparted to see if it is a GPT or other type, and what you have installed.

I have W10, Debian and openSuSE and space for another OS if needed, so it is the partitioning where the fault probably is.

ISO images of various Microsoft OS's are available. They can be be downloaded (sometimes you need a licence key other than the HP OEM key) and 'burnt' to a DVD or USB. They will NOT contain the appropriate HP software, like drivers etc, but will enable a repair to be started

For when you only have Linux etc (non MS OS) to create install media.
