For the past couple of weeks, my HP Omen 40L keeps randomly shutting off due to a "thermal shutdown". It has happened now maybe 7 times. My PC doesn't get hot. The hottest I've seen the temperature at is around 70 degrees Celsius. I don't play heavy games or do anything crazy on the PC. It just happened to me right now when all I had up was 5 Microsoft edge tabs.
Through the Omen gaming hub, I even have it manually set so if the PC gets to 65 Celsius, it turns up the fan to 2200 rpm to cool it back down to 55 where I normally have it. What could be the issue here?

@Arbeanian, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Your HP Omen 40L Gaming Desktop shutting down due to a "thermal shutdown" despite normal temperatures suggests one of the following issues:
Possible Causes and Fixes:
1. Faulty Temperature Sensor or Misreporting
- Even if your system reports 70°C, a faulty sensor might be sending incorrect high-temperature readings to the motherboard, forcing an emergency shutdown.
✅ Fix: - Check the actual temperature using HWMonitor, Core Temp, or HWInfo to cross-verify against the Omen Gaming Hub readings.
- If you see sudden spikes or a sensor showing excessively high temperatures, your motherboard or CPU sensor might be faulty.
2. Power Supply Unit (PSU) Issue
- If your PSU is faulty or not delivering consistent power, your PC might be misinterpreting power fluctuations as a thermal issue and shutting down.
✅ Fix: - Try a different power outlet or surge protector.
- If possible, test your system with a different PSU to see if the problem persists.
3. BIOS or Firmware Issue
- A buggy BIOS might be causing false thermal shutdown triggers.
✅ Fix: - Check if there is a BIOS update available for your model on the HP website.
- Reset the BIOS to default settings and check if the issue persists.
4. CPU Throttling Due to Incorrect Voltage Settings
- If your CPU undervolting or voltage settings are unstable, it might be causing shutdowns.
✅ Fix: - Open BIOS and disable any overclocking or undervolting settings.
- If using third-party undervolting tools, disable them.
5. Windows Power Management Settings
- A misconfigured Windows power plan might be causing shutdowns.
✅ Fix: - Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose High Performance.
- In Advanced Power Settings, check that Processor Power Management isn’t throttling CPU performance.
6. Failing Thermal Paste or Loose Cooler Contact
- Even if temps look normal, a loose CPU cooler or dried-up thermal paste can cause random shutdowns.
✅ Fix: - Reapply thermal paste on the CPU and ensure the cooler is properly seated.
7. Check Event Viewer for Error Logs
- Open Event Viewer (Win + X → Event Viewer)
- Look for Critical Errors under Windows Logs > System
- If it says something like Kernel-Power 41, it may be PSU or motherboard-related.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
