Microsoft Windows 11

After bootup cannot sign in using pin, Pop up message says too many sign in attempt's and use other sign options or wait 2 hours and try again. After waiting 2 hours I can sign in using pin. I tried Bit locker and Recovery Key, same results.

Understanding the Issue

Both BitLocker and Recovery Key are security features intended to protect your data. A lockout after too many sign-in attempts is a security mechanism designed to thwart unauthorized access.

Steps to Resolve PIN Lockout

Option 1: Use Another Sign-In Method

If you are locked out of your PIN, use different sign-in options such as:

  1. Password: Sign in using your standard password instead of the PIN.
  2. Recovery Key: If BitLocker is enabled, you can use your recovery key to unlock your device.

Option 2: Wait and Retry

The message indicates that you need to wait two hours after too many failed attempts. After the wait period:

  1. Retry Sign-In: Attempt signing in with your PIN again.

Option 3: Change Your PIN

If the problem persists, consider changing your PIN after signing in successfully using another method.

Sign In: Use your password or recovery key to access your account.

Change PIN:

  • In Windows, search for and open Sign-in options.
  • Select PIN (Windows Hello), click Change, and follow the on-screen instructions.

Option 4: Reset or Change Your Password

If you forgot your PIN entirely or are concerned about repeated lockouts, resetting or changing your password might be a safer alternative.

Reset Microsoft Account Password

To reset your Microsoft account password, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Microsoft account password reset page.
  2. Follow the on-screen directions to reset your password.

Change Local Account Password

  1. Sign in using an administrator account.
  2. Open Control Panel, and then go to User Accounts.

Using BitLocker and Recovery Key

If your PC has BitLocker enabled and you suspect it's interfering with PIN operations:

  1. Ensure you have the correct Recovery Key handy.
  2. After multiple unsuccessful attempts, BitLocker might engage more stringent security measures.

Resetting Your PC

If all else fails and you cannot sign in or unlock:

  1. On the sign-in screen, press and hold the Shift key, and click the power icon Power icon, select Restart, and keep pressing Shift until "Choose an option" screen appears.
  2. Click Troubleshoot > Reset this PC > Remove everything.
