HP ENVY Desktop - 700-430qe CTO
Microsoft Windows 11

It gets stuck in the BIOS for lone time. If I unplug it for 5 min it boots quickly. But the next restart or boot is back stuck in BIOS for a lonf time. I have recovered the BIOS 3 times, no fix. Could it be a cmos battery even tho it is just over year old.

@Deaken, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're experiencing a persistent issue with your HP ENVY 700-430qe being stuck on the BIOS splash screen or in the BIOS for an extended period. Given the symptoms you've described, let's explore the potential causes and the steps you can take to troubleshoot the problem.

Possible Causes:

Weak or Faulty CMOS Battery

Even if the CMOS battery is relatively new, it can still be faulty. A weak battery can lead to:

  • Slow POST (Power-On Self-Test)
  • Incorrect RTC (real-time clock)
  • Boot or BIOS hang-ups

➡ Solution: Try replacing the CMOS battery (usually a CR2032). It's inexpensive and easy to swap. Ensure the system is unplugged and discharged before opening the case.

USB or Peripheral Conflict

Sometimes, connected devices like USB sticks, keyboards, or wireless dongles can cause BIOS hang-ups.➡ Solution: Boot with minimal peripherals connected—only the keyboard and mouse.

Fast Boot / UEFI Setting Issues

A corrupted UEFI boot path or issues with fast boot settings can lead to BIOS behavior problems.➡ Solution: Disable Fast Boot in the BIOS settings and check if the Boot Order is set correctly (ensure the SSD/HDD is prioritized).

Power Supply or Motherboard Issue

Since unplugging the power helps temporarily, this might indicate a problem with the power supply or motherboard components.➡ Solution: This is harder to test without spare parts, but keep this in mind if other solutions don’t work.

Drive Issues (especially SSD/HDD)

A failing drive or bad SATA/NVMe connection can cause delays during the BIOS process.➡ Solution: Disconnect all storage drives and boot into BIOS only. If it boots quickly, one of the drives might be causing the issue.

What You Should Try Next:

  1. Replace the CMOS Battery: Swap out the CR2032 battery and reset BIOS settings to default.
  2. Boot with Minimal Peripherals: Disconnect all devices except for the keyboard and mouse.
  3. Disconnect All Storage Drives: Power on the system without any drives connected to see if the BIOS still lags.
  4. Update BIOS: If you haven't already, check for the latest BIOS version, but only update if you're not already on the latest version.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
