bios update - no option to update

CPU fan failed and PC would not boot except to "fan failure" message. Fan has been replaced, but now constantly getting blue screen error BSOD, which reads "WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR" and sometimes other errors. Windows tries to boot into recovery but BSODs again and again.

What I've tried: 

 1) Reset BIOS to defaults. DONE - same behavior after reset to BIOS defaults.

 2) Tried booting from USB drives (several) using Linux recovery tools (Kaspersky, Ubuntu Live, etc.). KERNEL PANIC, etc.

 3) Downloaded BIOS update from HP and created BIOS update USB. Rebooted with USB key (I turned off secure boot, etc. to allow USB booting.) - NOTHING. I tried this both allowing BIOS to run untouched  and by going into BIOS options (pressing ESC @ boot up) - no options anywhere to read/update BIOS.

According to an HP Support doc, I tried updating the BIOS from w/in "HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI". The version on this PC is version 5.2.2.0:  I see no option to update UEFI (Flash BIOS). Options read as follows: System Information, System Tests, Component Tests, Test Logs, Language, Exit. 

What do I try next, please?

BIOS: JA2 v80.35

CPU: AMD A8-6500

RAM: 8GB DDR3, single DIMM in slot 4.

     NOTE: System came w/ RAM in slot 4. Doesn't POST if RAM DIMM is in slot #1. Is this normal?

Forgot to add that I've also tried to use UEFI utilities from both internal HDD and a USB drive.

When I try to run "HpBiosUpdate.efi" from the HDD's , the message "Application Execution Complete: Application execution completed with an Error Code. Press ESC to return to the menu." But, no - it doesn't tell me what that error code is. WELL DONE.

Trying to load the same-named util from a USB drive gives up another unhelpful error, "Application Load Error: This application failed a security check."
