Hi @dazbo,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're experiencing a serious issue with your OMEN by HP 40L Gaming Desktop PC, where the system locks up (black screen and loud fans) and becomes unresponsive, forcing you to do a hard reset. Here are several troubleshooting steps to try, as this could be a hardware, thermal, or software-related issue.
Check for Overheating:
- Monitor Temperatures: Download a hardware monitoring tool like HWMonitor or MSI Afterburner to check your CPU and GPU temperatures. If your system is overheating, it could trigger these black screens and high fan speeds.
- Clean the PC: Make sure the PC's cooling system is clean. Dust can cause poor airflow, leading to overheating.
- Reapply Thermal Paste: If your PC is older or has been heavily used, you may need to reapply thermal paste to your CPU or GPU.
Check Power Supply (PSU):
- Ensure Power Supply is Adequate: If the power supply unit (PSU) is failing or underpowered, it could cause these black screen issues. Check if your PSU provides enough power for your CPU and GPU, especially if you've upgraded components.
- Test PSU: You can use a PSU tester or try swapping it with another PSU to rule out a power issue.
Update BIOS & Drivers:
- Update BIOS: Visit HP's support site to check for any BIOS updates for your OMEN 40L. Sometimes BIOS updates can fix hardware stability issues.
- Update GPU Drivers: Ensure your graphics card drivers are up to date. You can do this via NVIDIA GeForce Experience or AMD Adrenalin, depending on your GPU.
- Check for Windows Updates: Make sure you have the latest Windows updates installed as well.
Test RAM & Storage:
- Run Memory Diagnostics: Run Windows Memory Diagnostic (search in the Start menu) to check for faulty RAM.
- Check for Disk Errors: Run chkdsk or CrystalDiskInfo to check for any issues with your hard drive or SSD.
Disable Overclocking:
- Turn Off Overclocking: If you've overclocked your CPU, GPU, or RAM, revert everything to default settings in the BIOS to see if the system stabilizes.
Check Event Viewer:
- Look for Error Logs: Open Event Viewer (search in Start) and check for any critical errors around the time of the crash. Look for Kernel-Power events, as they often indicate sudden shutdowns or freezes.

Graphics Card Issues:
- Reseat the GPU: Power down the PC and unplug it. Open the case and carefully remove the GPU from the PCIe slot and then reseat it. Ensure all cables are securely connected.
- Test GPU: If you have access to another GPU, swap it in to see if the issue persists. This can help rule out whether your current GPU is the problem.
Test with a Different Monitor or Cable:
- Try a different monitor or HDMI/DisplayPort cable to rule out display or connection issues.
Perform a Clean Boot or Safe Mode Boot:
- Perform a clean boot to see if the problem is caused by third-party software. If the issue goes away, you may need to identify and uninstall any conflicting software.
Reinstall Windows:
- As a last resort, consider doing a clean reinstall of Windows to rule out any corrupted system files or software conflicts. Back up your important files before proceeding.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
