I recently downloaded a driver update. WHen my computer restarted it gave a quick error message saying there is an issue with my fan. When I look at the fan through the window, I see it starting and stopping before it can completely turn around.

@Cody77, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding Fan Overheat Warning on Boot Up!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

If you are experiencing fan issues after a driver update, it may be related to a problem in the BIOS settings or a malfunction with the fan itself. Here are steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

1. Understand the Issue

It's important to recognize the symptoms related to the fan issue. Given that the fan starts and stops before it can complete a rotation, this could indicate a malfunction or a compatibility problem introduced by the recent driver update.

2. Examine the Environment

Check all external cables and connections to ensure there are no loose connections. Confirm that the power sources, such as your AC outlet and adapter, are functioning correctly.

3. Perform a Visual Inspection of Hardware

Physically inspect the fan for any visible abnormalities such as dust, obstructions, or physical damage that might prevent it from spinning properly.

4. Update BIOS and Drivers

Whenever possible, update to the latest BIOS, firmware, and drivers to ensure compatibility and optimal performance. If a recent driver update caused the issue, a BIOS update might help resolve it.

  • Manually updating BIOS:
    • You can update the BIOS manually by downloading the latest version from HP's website and following the installation instructions.
    • Follow the specific BIOS update instructions provided with your download.

5. HP Hardware Diagnostics and Tools

HP offers several diagnostic tools to help identify hardware issues:

  • HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI):
    • Turn on or restart the computer, quickly press the esc key, and then press f2.
    • The BIOS searches for the diagnostic tools, starting with a connected USB drive, then the hard drive, and finally the BIOS itself.
    • Select the type of diagnostic test with the keyboard arrow keys and follow the onscreen instructions.
    • Use System Tests and Component Tests to check hardware functionality. If the tool detects an issue, write down the information for further troubleshooting.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
