HP All-in-One PC 24-df1000i (1W761AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

we had a recent power surge at home and now my wife's desktop won't boot. After doing a power dump, reconnecting the power adapter and pushing the power button, I get 4 short white blinks and one long white blink on the front of the desktop. I haven't found out what these blinks are indicating. There is no indication of power on the monitor; only the blinks on the lower right front and the white indicator on the back when plugging in the power adapter. I am not sure if the internal power supply is dead, if the SSD is dead, or the motherboard fried. This unit is out of warranty, but my wife wants her PC to work. I may be prepared (depending on the part & cost) to buy a replacement component to get her back to working with this PC. Any guidance on what may be the problem with this unit would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for any guidance on this matter,

Bob

Hi @BobMobley1,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your PC!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Blink Code Interpretation:

  • In the context of HP diagnostic codes, the number of short and long blinks corresponds to specific categories and types of errors. Generally, the first number (4) refers to a broad error category (often hardware-related issues), and the second number (1) points to a specific issue within that category.

Common Error Causes:

  • System Board: The long blink often indicates a problem with the system board. This could be due to a power surge affecting the board's functionality.
  • Memory Issues: Sometimes, the RAM may be improperly seated or damaged, causing diagnostic codes like these.

Troubleshooting Steps

Check Power Supply:

  • Ensure that the power supply and power adapter are securely connected and not damaged. A surge protector should be used if available.

Reset Components:

  • Try reseating the RAM and any other removable hardware components. This involves physically re-sliding the RAM into its slot to ensure a secure connection.

Disconnect External Devices:

  • Disconnect all peripherals and external devices. Attempt to boot the system with just the power connection active.

Consult the Maintenance Guide:

  • For detailed troubleshooting, you can refer to the HP maintenance guide for your model. This guide often includes diagnostic code interpretations and solutions. This can typically be accessed via the HP support website.

I hope this helps.
