hi, I updated my GPU recently but my pc won't boot if I remove the old video card . I updated the drivers for the new video card and its working , but if I remove the old video card to free up the port the pc just beeps and wont boot. so now I have 2 video cards installed using the new one. in the boot settings I set it to the new GPU .. not sure why the HP needs the old card in to boot.

There may be a primary and secondary video slot. Put the video card you want in the other slot.
You did not mention your system name or OS which make it hard to debug.

thanks for the quick reply . sorry its a Hp Z640 with win10.
I did try to put the new card on the top PCI slot. PC would just beep. then put the old card on the bottom slot (flipped the cards around) and it booted .. its like the old card is a key to get it to boot lol

This is strange but I had something similar happen with a video card that was designed for computation (mining). use. I had to add another video card or enable the onboard graphics.
What are the two cards and which one was the one needed to boot?
Download gpu-z and see if there is something strange with the card that does not boot. See if it has UEFI bios and if the bios belongs to the card and is not a mining bios.

The card that came with the HP Z640 was a Quadro K2000, and the one im using is a GTX 660. I'm able to use the 660 as long as I keep the k2000 in a PCie slot. in the HP F10 menu I have assigned slot 2 "GTX660' as primary GPU and have remove the K2000 from windows in device manager but the pc won't boot without the k2000 plugged in. i have a GTX 1080 TI coming today to replace the GTX660 but ill still have to keep the K2000 in for it to post with beeping red.
I guess I can just leave it in"K2000"since I don't need to add more cards at this point , but just don't understand. I just get errors from After effects, photoshop and cinema4d that the K2000 is out of date every time I start them.. and I hate seeing the error.. wish I could just remove the card all together. Thank you the help
