I have never had to put in a password before because it was auto saved.  I cannot remember what it is and now i am locked out of my computer.  When i choose reset password, it wants an external media device.  Help?  Thank you.

Hi @Yukon6470,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand how stressful it is to be locked out of your computer, especially when you’ve relied on auto-login before. Don’t worry, there are ways to fix this without losing your files.

Here are your best options:

1. Use Password Reset Disk (if you created one)

If you previously made a password reset disk, insert it and follow the on-screen steps. If not, move to the next method.

2. Reset via Microsoft Account (if you sign in with one)

  • On the login screen, click “I forgot my password”.
  • Follow the prompts to reset online using your Microsoft account credentials.
  • You’ll need internet access and possibly a verification code sent to your email or phone.

3. Use Windows Recovery Options

Since it’s asking for external media, it means you need a Windows installation or recovery drive:

  1. On another PC, download the Windows 10 installation media tool from Microsoft.
  2. Create a bootable USB drive.
  3. Boot your locked PC from that USB.
  4. Choose Repair your computer → Troubleshoot → Reset this PC or Command Prompt for advanced options.

4. Local Account Without Microsoft Login?

If you’re using a local account and forgot the password:

  • Boot into Safe Mode with Command Prompt (via recovery options).
  • Use the command:
  • net user yourusername newpassword

Replace yourusername with your account name and newpassword with a new password.

5. If Nothing Works

You may need to reset Windows (keeping files if possible):

  • Boot from recovery media.
  • Select Keep my files during reset.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
