Hi @Cjed, and welcome to HP Support Community!

Thank you for reaching out with your concern. I'm glad to assist you today.

I understand you're unable to log into your Windows 10 computer and are seeing a message asking for a Windows 10 disk. You're also looking to transfer data to a new computer. Let's walk through the steps to help you recover access and transfer your files.

Understand the Error

The message about needing a "Windows 10 disk" usually means:

  • Windows is unable to boot due to corruption or missing system files.
  • The system is prompting for recovery media to repair or reinstall Windows.

Create Windows 10 Installation Media

You can create a bootable USB drive using another working computer:

  • Visit the official Microsoft page: Download Windows 10
  • Click "Download tool now" and run the Media Creation Tool.
  • Choose "Create installation media (USB flash drive)" and follow the prompts.
  • Use a USB drive with at least 8GB capacity.

Once created, plug it into your affected computer and boot from it:

  • Power on the computer and press Esc, F9, or F12 (depending on model) to access the boot menu.
  • Select the USB drive to boot.

Attempt Startup Repair

After booting from the USB:

  1. Choose your language and click Next.
  2. Click "Repair your computer" (bottom left).
  3. Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.

This may fix the boot issue without reinstalling Windows.

Recover Your Files

If Startup Repair doesn’t work, you can still recover your data:

  • From the same Advanced options screen, choose Command Prompt.
  • Use a USB drive to copy files manually, or
  • Use a tool like HP Cloud Recovery Tool or third-party recovery software.

Alternatively, you can remove the hard drive and connect it to another PC using a SATA-to-USB adapter to copy your files.

Transfer to New Computer

Once your files are backed up, you can transfer them to your new computer using:

  • External USB drive
  • Cloud storage (OneDrive, Google Drive, etc.)
  • HP’s PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI if you want to test the old PC before retiring it.

If the suggestions helped solve the problem, please let us know by clicking “Accepted Solution.” It really helps fellow users find quick answers.

A quick “Yes” also goes a long way in showing appreciation!

Take care and happy computing!

Best regards,

Max3Aj
