HP All-in-One 24-f0040
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Windows crashes and an “Automatic Repair” screen appears. I click on “advanced options,” then “troubleshoot,” and am given 6 options, including “Uninstall updates.” But when I click on this option I am told to insert a “password” for the “local account administrator” – which is me. HOW DO I FIND OUT WHAT THE PASSWORD IS (I have no record of ever setting up that user account).

Hello @SPR2

Sorry to hear that you are having problems ... I would like to help you.

The Windows file system could be corrupt or there is a hard disk error or undefined technical error.

(1) Test your hardware Using the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI)

--->>> Perform Extensive Tests

--->>> Perform <all> tests

https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_2854458-2733239-16

See section <Running HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI tests when Windows doesn't start>

See how it works:

(2) Please report your results ( error messages, take pictures )

( if serial number, device id, UUID, System Board CT Number is displayed, please blur )

This video shows how to test your HP computer hardware using HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI. If you suspect that your computer has hardware issues, follow the steps in this video to isolate and identify them using the HP PC Diagnostics UEFI. Chapters: 00:00 Introduction 00:18 Download and install

Thank you. However, the "hp.com/go/pcdiags" "Page can’t be reached." That said, "Running HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI tests when Windows doesn't start" is an option under "HP SUPPORT ASSISTANT." I ran that and other diagnostic tests before posting the issue and the results were uniformly "PASSED."

As to the subject "'Automatic Repair' issues," they're in remission at the moment. I did learn that what Microsoft calls a "password" -- needed to run all of the "Automatic Repair" options -- is actually a Microsoft account PIN. Which, it seems, I never created. So, hopefully, if and when the crashing resumes I'll be prepared.

P.S.: I did uninstall, then reinstall Google Chrome – which cut the crashing considerably (down to zero so far today).

Hello @SPR2

(1) Open the DIAGNOSTIC Utility
- Access the Utility using a series of key presses during the boot process.

- Turn off the computer and wait five seconds.
- Turn on the computer, and then immediately press the esc key repeatedly until the Startup Menu opens.
- Press F2 to open diagnostics

(2) Please report your results ( error messages, take pictures )

( if serial number, device id, UUID, System Board CT Number is displayed, please blur )
