Hi. I was online last week when we had a power outage. It lasted a couple hours. Ever since then, every time I boot up the computer, it goes through the 'Restart' process, which takes about 10 minutes. How can I get back to the regular short upboot? Thanks.

Hi @georged1,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

A sudden power outage can cause Windows or startup settings to behave abnormally. Based on the HP guidance provided, try these options in order from least invasive to most invasive:

Use Microsoft System Restore first:

  • This can return your PC to a point in time before the issue started.

  • It is described as the least invasive option and does not destroy your data.

  • HP recommends trying this first when the PC was working normally before a recent change.

Try a Microsoft Refresh:

  • If System Restore does not help, a Refresh can replace system files back to their original state while helping preserve your personal files.

Use HP Recovery only if needed:

  • If the problem continues, HP Recovery is the more drastic option.

  • This returns the PC to its original factory condition and can remove installed apps and data, so back up your files first

Back up important files before major recovery steps:

  • HP strongly emphasises creating backups before recovery actions.

I hope this will help.

Take care and have a good day.

Thanks, Jerry. I'm still having some problems with my land-line phone from this power outage. A repairman's coming by tomorrow. I'm waiting until after that to apply your solution(s). I doubt it, but there's a small chance that the problem is in the outside line from my ISP.

Thank you for the update. The outage must feel disruptive, and waiting for the repairman to check the outside line is a smart step. Once that’s resolved, my solution should run more smoothly and more reliably. Please share how things look after the visit so we can move forward.

Hi. I started looking at the Microsoft System Restore, but it seems like the earliest Restore would be to the state of the computer on 6/16/26. The power outage that caused this problem, however, occurred on 6/10/26; so I'd need to go back to 6/9/26 to solve the problem. Is that possible?

Thank you for your response.

You can only restore your computer to dates where restore points actually exist. If the earliest available point is June 16, you cannot roll back to June 9 unless a restore point was created then. System Restore doesn’t let you “choose” any date; it only works with the snapshots Windows saved.
