Hi @walk16,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're encountering a serious issue with your HP computer during the recovery process, where the screen goes black and the system appears to hang. Here are some steps you can try to resolve this issue.
Check Connections and Peripherals:
- Ensure that all cables (power, video, etc.) are securely connected.
- Disconnect any unnecessary peripherals (USB drives, printers, external hard drives, etc.) and try again.
Access Safe Mode:
- Turn off the computer completely.
- Turn it on and immediately start pressing the F8 key repeatedly until the Advanced Boot Options menu appears.
- Select "Safe Mode" and press Enter. If the system boots into Safe Mode, you may be able to troubleshoot or perform a system restore from within Safe Mode.
Perform a Hard Reset:
- Shut down the computer and unplug it from the power source.
- Disconnect all external devices.
- Press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds.
- Plug the computer back in and try to turn it on.
Use a Windows Installation Media:
- If you have a Windows installation USB or DVD, you can use it to repair your system.
- Insert the installation media and boot from it by pressing the appropriate key (often F12, F9, or Esc) to access the boot menu.
- Select "Repair your computer" and follow the prompts to access recovery options.
Reset the BIOS to Default Settings:
- Enter the BIOS/UEFI setup by pressing the appropriate key during startup (often F2, Del, or Esc).
- Find the option to reset to default settings, save changes, and exit.
Check for Hardware Issues:
- If possible, test the monitor on another computer to rule out display issues.
- Run built-in diagnostics if available (often accessed through the BIOS or a key during startup like F10).

Step-by-Step Guide to Create a Windows Installation Media
If you don’t have a Windows installation media, here’s how you can create one:
Prepare a USB Drive:
- You will need an 8GB or larger USB drive that will be formatted during the process.
Download the Media Creation Tool:
- Go to the Microsoft Media Creation Tool page.
- Download and run the tool.
Create the Installation Media:
- Select "Create installation media for another PC."
- Choose the language, edition, and architecture (64-bit or 32-bit).
- Select USB flash drive as the media to use.
- Follow the prompts to create the installation media.
Boot from the USB Drive:
- Insert the USB drive into your HP computer.
- Restart the computer and enter the boot menu (often F12, F9, or Esc).
- Select the USB drive as the boot device.
Repair Your Computer:
- On the initial setup screen, select "Repair your computer."
- Choose "Troubleshoot" > "Advanced options" > "Startup Repair" or "System Restore" and follow the prompts.
These steps should help you address the black screen issue during system recovery.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
