Hi @GB1217

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The "Start PXE over IPv4" message usually appears when the computer is trying to boot from a network instead of the internal hard drive. This can happen if the BIOS/UEFI boot order is incorrect or if the computer cannot detect the internal hard drive. Here are steps you can take to resolve the issue.

Check Boot Order in BIOS/UEFI:

  1. Restart the computer and immediately start pressing the BIOS/UEFI key (usually F2, F10, Esc, or Del). This key varies depending on the manufacturer.
  2. Once in the BIOS/UEFI setup, look for the "Boot" or "Boot Order" menu.
  3. Ensure that the internal hard drive (or SSD) is listed as the first boot device.
  4. Save changes and exit the BIOS/UEFI setup.

Check Hard Drive Connection:

  1. If you are comfortable opening your computer, ensure that the internal hard drive is properly connected.
  2. Check both the power and data cables to ensure they are securely attached to the hard drive and the motherboard.

Run a Diagnostic Test:

  1. Many HP computers have built-in diagnostic tools. Restart the computer and press Esc repeatedly until the Startup Menu opens.
  2. Press F2 to open the System Diagnostics.
  3. Run the "Hard Drive Test" to check if the hard drive is functioning properly.

Check for Bootable Media:

  1. Remove any external USB drives, CDs, or DVDs that may be connected to the computer.
  2. Sometimes the computer might try to boot from an external device that is not bootable, leading to the PXE boot attempt.

Reset BIOS/UEFI Settings to Default:

  1. In the BIOS/UEFI setup, look for an option to reset settings to default (usually called "Load Setup Defaults" or "Reset to Default").
  2. Save the changes and exit the BIOS/UEFI setup.

Repair Boot Sector:

  1. If you have a Windows installation or recovery media, insert it into the computer and boot from it.
  2. Select "Repair your computer" and go to the "Troubleshoot" menu.
  3. Select "Advanced options" and then "Command Prompt".
  4. In the Command Prompt, type the following commands one by one and press Enter after each:

bootrec /fixmbr

bootrec /fixboot

bootrec /scanos

bootrec /rebuildbcd

  1. Restart the computer and see if it boots correctly.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
