Hi @GB1217,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The "Start PXE over IPv4" message usually appears when the computer is trying to boot from a network instead of the internal hard drive. This can happen if the BIOS/UEFI boot order is incorrect or if the computer cannot detect the internal hard drive. Here are steps you can take to resolve the issue.
Check Boot Order in BIOS/UEFI:
- Restart the computer and immediately start pressing the BIOS/UEFI key (usually F2, F10, Esc, or Del). This key varies depending on the manufacturer.
- Once in the BIOS/UEFI setup, look for the "Boot" or "Boot Order" menu.
- Ensure that the internal hard drive (or SSD) is listed as the first boot device.
- Save changes and exit the BIOS/UEFI setup.
Check Hard Drive Connection:
- If you are comfortable opening your computer, ensure that the internal hard drive is properly connected.
- Check both the power and data cables to ensure they are securely attached to the hard drive and the motherboard.
Run a Diagnostic Test:
- Many HP computers have built-in diagnostic tools. Restart the computer and press Esc repeatedly until the Startup Menu opens.
- Press F2 to open the System Diagnostics.
- Run the "Hard Drive Test" to check if the hard drive is functioning properly.
Check for Bootable Media:
- Remove any external USB drives, CDs, or DVDs that may be connected to the computer.
- Sometimes the computer might try to boot from an external device that is not bootable, leading to the PXE boot attempt.
Reset BIOS/UEFI Settings to Default:
- In the BIOS/UEFI setup, look for an option to reset settings to default (usually called "Load Setup Defaults" or "Reset to Default").
- Save the changes and exit the BIOS/UEFI setup.
Repair Boot Sector:
- If you have a Windows installation or recovery media, insert it into the computer and boot from it.
- Select "Repair your computer" and go to the "Troubleshoot" menu.
- Select "Advanced options" and then "Command Prompt".
- In the Command Prompt, type the following commands one by one and press Enter after each:
bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /scanos
bootrec /rebuildbcd
- Restart the computer and see if it boots correctly.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
