HP xw8600 Base Model Workstation
Microsoft Windows 7 (32-bit)

xw8600 workstation found in scrapyard, onboard SATA connectors do not work with SATA drives.  Dual Xeon X5492 3.4gHz processors and 4gb of RAM.  TS-H353B DVD ROM drive.  Two 250gb SATA drives came with it.  The BIOS was v01.31; I was able to flash that to v01.46 using a USB thumb drive.  Tried changing  SATA emulator settings in the BIOS with no results.  I tried a 1TB SATA drive from another computer  but it was not seen either.  On a whim, I connected the optical drive and the 1TB SATA drive to the SAS connectors on the board and they were recognized.  I was able to install Windows 7 on the harddrive.  When the computer boots up I see a message that says:  Controller Bus #00, Device #1F, Function #02:  06 Ports  AHCI BIOS not installed.  Does this refer to the SATA controller?  It may be a non-issue since the drives work in the SAS connectors but I was just wondering why the SATA connectors apparently do not work as they should.  The HP documentation I've read indicates that SATA internal drives should only work in the SATA controller.  Is there a BIOS setting or jumper on the motherboard I am overlooking?

Thanks,

Kevin
