Pavilion 590 P-0024na
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hey guys,

I have a HP Pavilion 590 P-0024na with a GeForce 1050ti, 128gb SSD boot drive and an additional 8gb Vengeance Corsair 2666mhz DIMM installed.

Under system info in Win10, it was confirming 12gb installed but only 10.9gb usable for my RAM. I check in my system info in BIOS, which was also confirming 12gb installed. I have disabled my iGPU in device manager, but I assumed this was the main culprit for the unusable RAM. I changed a fer settings based on some online guides, such as paging sizes and playing with MSConfig settings but nothing had an impact so I reverted each back to its original settings.

My final option was up update the BIOS, in hope this either automatically disabled the iGPU upon detection of the discrete card or that it would give me an option to disable it. I have therefore just updated my BIOS to version AMI F20. 26/10/2018 and unfortunately not only are there no such options, my available RAM has now dropped to 9.92gb!

So my questions are as such;

1) am I right in assuming the Ryzen 3 2200g onboard Vega Graphics is reserving the RAM pre-OS boot, or is there anything else that could be causing this?

2) is there any reason why updating the BIOS would cause the 'missing' RAM to increase from 1gb to 2gb?

3a) Such I just accept my losses, revert the BIOS to the previous version and be happy I'm 'only' loosing 1gb of RAM in sacrifice to the computer gods?

3b) Whats the safest way for me to restore to the previous BIOS?

Thanks for any and all help on this. And I hope everyone have a great Christmas, and that The Grinch doesn't steal anyone else's RAM this year!

Thanks

Paul

Please refer to this article which may shed some light. TechSpot

Long story short, you might have a setting in your BIOS called UMA Frame Buffer Size where you can allocate memory specifically for Vega Graphics. Looks like the full 2G is currently being allocated.

Excerpt:

"Generally, Windows does a good job of managing memory and prioritizing applications for best results, but at least some portion of your system memory will be allocated to the integrated graphics. Raven Ridge APUs use a method called Unified Memory Architecture or UMA for short. Most current AM4 motherboards let you set the memory size somewhere between 64MB and 2GB. Depending on what size you select, this will determine the maximum amount of system memory that is allocated exclusively to the Vega graphics. "
