Here is the image of the motherboard:

M.2 SSD slot is right below video card PCIe slot

Ignore the key A shorter slot, the one you want is just below the PCI Express x16 (video card slot) and parallel to it. It's a key M which is normal for an SSD type M.2 slot and it is a 2280 form factor 22mm wide and 80mm long  which is the current normal confiiguration commonly called a "gumstick" M.2 disk.

I am not sure its true that the slot will only accept an NVME type M.2 SSD but we know its not working with the Crucial brand SATA one you are trying. Reseat it one more time and boot to the BIOS and see if it is seen. If not there is likely nothing you can do with the BIOS and I think as long as you can return the Crucial SSD get your money back and get an NVME type (WD Black or Samsung 970 Evo are good examples) you can try one of those although I have never seen an M.2 that would refuse SATA and accept NVME but lots of them the other way around.

Hi,

Please see this thread (Link) for clarification on the type of M.2 drive HP normally supports. I have participated in many threads similar to the above thread resulting in the same conclusion: so far it appears M.2 SATA drives are not supported on HP M.2 equipped consumer motherboards.

There may be exceptions. I have not come across one HP motherboard that supports SATA in the M.2 slot.

The SATA drive does not work. The only other option is a M.2 PCIe NVME stick drive.

Hey there!

I have looked up the motherboard that you listed (IPM17-TP) and i too, found only one M.2 SSD mount (Socket 3, Key M).

right below the ssd mount, there is anouther M.2 for the WLAN card (Socket 1, Key A).

Im thinking the problem lays with the ssd compatability here. Enusre that the SSD is compatible with socket 3, key M, and that it is not being shorted out by a standoff or something else. If that isnt the problem, you might have a bad M.2 drove or bad M.2 slot on the motherboard.

Hi Tommyb1a,

It appears HP is supporting SATA and PCIe M.2 drives on the latest product line (the 590 and possibly the 690 series).

A PCIe M.2 drive should work with your PC since the SATA M.2 drive does not.

HP should disclose M.2 drive support. Retail MB OEMs such as Asus, Gigabyte, Asrock, and MSI provide this information in the documentation.
