I wish to upgrade my OMEN 870-119 with a newer processor with more cores. I currently have the i7-6700. The 870-119 is equipped with socket LGA 1151. In the CPU upgrade information, the PC specs say:
- TDP: Up to 65 W
- Socket type: LGA 1151
- Motherboard supports the following processor upgrades:ProcessorTDPIntegrated GraphicsIntel Core i7-6700 (Skylake) 3.4 GHz Quad Core65 WIntel HD Graphics (GT2)Intel Core i5-6400 (Skylake) 2.7 GHz Quad Core65 WIntel HD Graphics (GT2)Intel Core i3-6100 (Skylake) 3.7 GHz Dual Core51 WIntel HD Graphics 530
But these specs were written before the newer / more powerful processors were commercialized.
My question: will the pc work with a more powerful processor (not in the list above) as long as it is the correct socket type and does not use more than 65W?

Welcome to our HP User Forum!
Your OMEN by HP Desktop PC - 870-119 (X6F75AA), according to: https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/omen-by-hp-870-100-desktop-pc-series/12079703/document/c0524108..., is fitted with an Odense2-S motherboard (SSID: 828A) with the Intel H170 chipset. Unfortunately, H170 is a single-chipset design that only supports 6th-gen Intel LGA1151 Core i7 / Core i5 / Core i3 / Pentium / Celeron processors on your OMEN by HP Desktop PC - 870-119.
And indeed, when we look at OMEN by HP Desktop PC - 870-119 Users here: https://www.userbenchmark.com/System/HP-870-119/41041, only 6th gen Intel processors are seen.
Hope this was helpful.
Kind Regards,

Forgive me, but where do you find this information?
the h170 chipset, is not only compatible with intel 6th gen
I admit it probably won't work ..
but hp released a similar model with h170

Besides, it would be possible to use this motherboard I think, to see if it's worth it, I doubt it but ..

What is relevant to the OP's inquiry, is that the H170 chipset on an OMEN by HP Desktop PC - 870-119 (X6F75AA) does NOT support 7th gen Intel processors because the OEM (HP) never added the code/enabled it to work.
Thus:
Nevertheless, you could try to see if -against all odds- a 7th gen processor works -but if this worked, one would expect to see actual real-life examples of this online, and I couldn't find a single 870-119 fitted with a 7th gen processor.

Sorry @NonSequitur777 if you take it the wrong way
I'm just asking you about what you're saying
"Unfortunately, H170 is a single-chipset design that only supports 6th-gen Intel LGA1151 Core i7 / Core i5 / Core i3 / Pentium / Celeron processors."
Because no, it's not exact, since hp has an identical motherboard h170 with 7th gen, and intel indicates the same thing
I was just asking if there was a site somewhere that would indicate that not possible, which is therefore false
If the user really needed this processor, that's significant information, that's all!
And I have learned here, even if there are no examples, that sometimes a stroke of luck can happen

Of course, I'm not saying to try, the risk of failure being very high.
But saying "never" is no longer in my line
keep up the good work, have a nice weekend
