Hi,
Your machine supports PC2-6400, 800-MHz, DDR2 with the following options:
Supports up to 4096 MB system memory
● 4096-MB total system memory (2048 MB × 2, dual-channel)
● 3072-MB total system memory (2048 MB × 1 + 1024 × 1)
● 2048-MB total system memory (1024 MB × 2, dual-channel)
● 2048-MB total system memory (2048 MB × 1)
● 1024-MB total system memory (512 MB × 2, dual-channel)
● 1024-MB total system memory (1024 MB × 1)
This is an old machine, you need to use right RAM otherwise it may not work. Please use part number on page 60 to search for RAM. The manual also shows you how to add/replace RAM:

Hi,
It can support up to 8 GB (2x4) but I'm afraid it would be quite costly in money

As mentioned above, it is an old machine. From time to time BIOS may allow machine to use 8GB therefore
(a) Upgrade BIOS first (also use the supplied link above - under Drivers saction).
(b) Buy RAM from Crucial and you can return if won't work from @CarlosE link.
Again, old machine therfore you definitely to get the right part.
Regards.

The maximum is 8 GB (4 + 4) SODIMM DDR2 because that's what Intel PM45 chipset supports on the motherboard:
