I’d like to add an SSD to my older Pavilion 510-p137cb, keeping my existing hard drive. Is that possible, and if so, what type of SSD would I need and where and how would I install it?

Hello
This shouldn't be a problem.
I doubt it, because the documentation is not very clear, but it would be necessary to open and check, if not
510-p137cb PC Product Specifications
possible to place the SSD in addition to the DD.
I only saw two sata ports here, but maybe I missed it!
Hamar motherboard specifications.
Otherwise, you can sacrifice the DVD player if not used!
Hard Drive Replacement Instructions
You should be able to install a conventional SAta ssd like this one for example:
https://www.crucial.com/ssd/mx500/ct500mx500ssd1
you may need a 3.5 to 2.5 adapter in order to place the ssd in the slot, not usually provided
you can also try with the scan
But you can try other brands of course

Yes, it seems to me that it exists, but never tested.
After this port could be used for a small graphics card
it would be a little more if possible
an example here

no, this is an example for a graphics card
there is no example of an ssd with a 16x pci port here
HP Pavilion Desktop - 510-p120g
Hamar motherboard specifications.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750Ti (4 GB)
HP Pavilion Desktop - 510-p137cb
Integrated Intel HD Graphics
otherwise there are adapters like for example
but I cannot give any guarantee of operation ( working ), because never tested.

Thanks once more. I think that I'm going to go with your first suggestion, which was to sacrifice the DVD drive and use its SATA connector. I'm not sure that if I use the PCIE that my operating system will even recognize it or allow me to boot from it.
Thanks again!

Promethee, I have a follow-on question. For the SSD, will I be able to use the power cable and connector cable that connected to the DVD drive, or will I need to purchase another type of cable(s)? If I need to purchase some, do you happen to know what kind or their specs?
Thanks!

I can not answer precisely, because it seems to me that we have no information for the available connectors.
For most computers, in fact this is not a problem, because the sata and power connectors of a DVD player are the same.
Only for certain Hp model, it is different.
You have to open the pc to check what is in place.
For SAta a priori it seems ok, in view of the visible connectors on the motherboard
For food I have a little doubt
But if it is different, it should be re-rated if there is not another connector on the power supply directly
Otherwise, it is possible to use a Y cable that you connect to the other DD
depending on it will have
to search, but it should look like this:

the example here may not be what you need.
When in doubt, because not always easy to search on the net.
you can go see a professional
