Solved!

Adding SSD to HP desktop

HP Recommended
HP Slimline 450-a00 Desktop
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I'm wanting to install a SSD alongside the HDD. The problem is that the motherboard (https://support.hp.com/gb-en/product/hp-slimline-450-a00-desktop-pc-series/7843175/document/c0467510...) only seems to have two SATA slots, both of which are being used, by the HDD and the CD drive. Can anybody help?

@DexterG,

The only solution is to remove the CD drive.  If you need CD's get an external drive. That is what has been suggested. If the CD drive is a 5.25" drive, there are USB 2.0 external adapters or external cases.

If I replace the CD drive with my SSD, will I be able to use the CD's SATA power cable?

Are you talking about a SATA cable or the PSU SATA power cable? Lucky for me my Mobo has 3 sata ports. My PSU had 4 SATA power connectors. If its just the sata ports than what you can do is unplug the dvd or cd cable and use it for the SDD. Clone everything from your HDD to your SDD. Then use your SSD as a primary and remove the HDD. Make sure your PC finds the new SDD in my computer app. If you cant find it, you have to type in the search bar (create and format hard disk partitions), look for your SSD in there, and I forgot how I did it but I clicked on the bottom on one of those blue squares with the info.

Just make sure you change in BIOS the startup option so that it boots up from your SDD  after you clone it.

It's the PSU SATA cable.The one coming out of the existing HDD has four wires that plug into the motherboard (or do I mean the PSU?), but the one coming out of the CD/DVD drive only has two, so that's what's concerning me.

@DexterG,

You will need to look on the cabling. If there is no unused SATA power connector, then a SATA "Y" is needed.  Example

Thanks Wb2001. The problem is that the power connections on the motherboard aren't SATA ones. I don't know what the correct term is, but this is the motherboard:
