Hi all, I need to pick your brains! I’m trying to upgrade my daughter’s pc so she can play better games. It’s an HP 295 G6 with a ryzen 5 4600G APU. To be fair the onboard Gpu is surprisingly good for some of the games she plays but for anything decent it crawls. The PSU was only 240w and no 8 pin PCIE power for graphics card. Had a nightmare trying to find one that would fit in place of the original. . The first turned up damaged so got a refund and I didn’t think it was the right one anyway. I’ve just received another with a higher power rating 550w. I fitted it without the graphics card (6600xt) and it booted fine. Next I installed the card and booted it using onboard Gpu fine. Speccy recognised there was another adapter in the system so went ahead and tried to start it with the cable plugged in to the card. It hung. Next rebooted with onboard Gpu which was fine and restarted into bios and made the new card the boot device. No joy it hung again. I know it’s a good card as it was out of my own machine. What have I missed?

Welcome to our HP community forum!
Please check the part number/wattage of your HP 295 G6 MT's power supply.
If you got an 180-watt power supply (likely with p/n: L89235-001), there is not a whole lot you can do to install any meaningful graphics card. Meaning, you would have to upgrade your power supply with a 310-watt unit, with p/n: L89232-001 ("Power supply unit 310W MT Sirius2 EPA90"). You can purchase this power supply in the UK, for example: https://www.serviceparts.uk/products/l89232-001.
With a 310-watt power supply, you could pick a GTX 1650, RX 6400, or this low-profile RTX 3050 6GB, which also doesn't need a PCIe power supply cable: https://www.amazon.co.uk/MSI-GeForce-3050-Gaming-Graphics/dp/B0CSPRNRZC/ref=sr_1_1?crid=29ETMYW7ARU7....
Just look/shop around for the best deal.
Hope this was helpful.
Kind Regards,
