I added a SATA hard drive to my computer which has only a SSD. There were three slots left on the motherboard to attach the SATA cable. I picked one and connected the other end to the drive. Upon bootup the BIOS recognized the drive and it shows in Device Manager, but does not appear in File Explorer as a drive letter. The drive is new and has probably not been formatted. Please offer any suggestions as to how I can access the drive.

If you create a partition, format the disk and use the assign command, it should be visible in the Windows Explorer.
Use the Disk Management snapin to accomplish the tasks. I will edit this after I see which version of Windows you have installed.
Windows 10.
Right click the Windows icon on the left had bottom corner of the screen. Now choose Disk Management. Look through the disks available and right click the new one to see the available options. Use the change drive letter and paths option to assign a drive letter after creating a partition and formatting it. That will make the new disk available for storage.
The options you see will be somewhat different as this disk already has been partitioned, formatted and assigned a letter in the operating system
