Hi there.

I just purchased a second hand HP ProDesk 400 G6 MT with a i7 9700 processor. Baseboard HP 8599 KBC version 08.98.00.

I looked inside the box, something I don’t usually do, and could see I have a very small, probably 32mm * 22mm, presumably M.2 SSD slotted into the motherboard in the designated position. Apparently it’s a PC SN530 NVME WDL 256Gb. According to Win 11 system it has an 83% remaining life which I guess is satisfactory?

I’ve seen on YouTube how to add a 2.5 inch SSD and it looks quite straightforward. Presumably any brand will do? And I will need to purchase a SATA power cable. I see one on eBay advertised for this machine with mpn = L24499-001 I assume that’s ok?

Also whilst looking inside the case I see that very close to my installed SSD on the motherboard just to the right and slightly forward and close to the back edge of the case there is what looks like another drive bay around the 32*22 size with a little screw hole. Is that another M.2 port? I thought this machine only had one? With my eyesight I think I could just make out a marking NUT6 though not sure that is right or what it refers to.

Apologise for the novice sounding questions.

Thank you for reading.

Edit. Just noticed this should be in the Desktop Hardware and Upgrade Questions section but when I posted no such option was available, only notebooks, sorry.

Hi @michael432000

It has two M.2 ports, one for the Wi-Fi card and the other for an NVMe drive.

M.2 (1 as M.2 2230 socket for WLAN/BT and 1 as M.2 2280 socket for storage)

The SATA drive can be any size and you can use the SATA cable indicated.

Congrats on the new ProDesk! Yep, the SN530’s remaining life looks fine. Adding a 2.5" SSD is easy—most brands work, and the L24499-001 SATA power cable should be okay. The extra spot you saw is likely just a mounting point, not a second M.2 slot. No worries about the questions—everyone starts somewhere!
