Pavilion 590-p0081c
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I just bought the Pavilion 590 p0081c and I want to add an SSD.  I am wondering if there is a slot on the motherboard for one, or do I need to replace the current HDD.   Any help would be appreciated.

@Paul1966

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.

I see you need help in upgrading the SSD, on HP Pavilion 590-p0081c desktop. Don't worry as I have a few suggestions which should help you.

After reading your post, I did go through the Product specifications of your product and found that you have  Expansion Slots 1 PCIe x16; 1 PCIe x1; 2 M.2 installed on the PC.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Thank you for the help.  After opening the back, I realize that the only way to upgrade to an SSD is to remove the Optane memory.  So, it seems that the expansion slots HP lists in the specs are already filled.  On the other hand, I am ok with replacing the optane memory for an SSD considering the SSD will be even faster and I can still use the HDD for additional storage.   I haven't tried this switch just yet, so I will keep you posted.

Thanks.

Same question as Paul1966, but I disagree with supports response.

1) The link Echo_Lake gives has a further link to the morther board (MB) specs, but the link to the MB does not work.  (oops error)

2) I opened my case and compared the specifications n the Link from Echo_Lake to my MB, but found several discrepancies.

a) there is only 1 M.2 Slot.  In use by Optane Memroy

b) There is no PCIe x1 expansion slot.  There is a PCIe x4 expansion slot.

c) The PCIex16 slot is there, but in use by Video Card in base configuration.

Actions required

1) Can you please correct the documentation associated with the system?

2) Can you please fix the link to the Motherboard Specifcations so that we can actually get the spec.

3)  There is no other "Detailed" specifciation to be found on HP site.  The MB spec may cover almost all of our needs, but still lacking regarding video card, power supply....   If you have detailed specifictions for the entire system, can you please publish it.

4)  Can you provide the correct procedure for installing an M.2 SSD?

Hi TheRealDude,

Item 4, to the best of my knowledge.

When you mess with HP factory configurations you introduce some level of uncertainty.

Changing HP factory specs can have warranty implications.

Removing Optane memory to install a M.2 NVME SSD requires modifying the existing operating system installation and the BIOS.

The Intel Optane guide can be reviewed at this site (Link).

Look at page 31 in the Intel Optane Installation guide for more information.

You will have to copy/clone the existing HP HDD boot and operating system image to the new M.2 NVME SSD after removing IRST Optane support.

After successfully: removing Optane support and moving the HDD operating system to the new NVME SSD (verified as a bootable device), you can use the HP factory HDD as a data drive.

Regards

Update:  I completed the installation of the SSD drive.  I had to first disable the Optane memory, then restart, verify it was disabled, then I shut down again, removed the Optane memory card and replaced it with an M.2 500gb SSD, restarted again, copied my os to the new drive and then open into the bios and change the boot order to boot to the new SSD.

I agree with TheRealDude.  The specs shown don't make getting the correct information before starting easy.  I had to open it up to see the configuration.

All in all, I am very happy with my upgrade and greatly appreciate the help.
