I have a single strip of 16GB in my Omnidesk with AMD 780M onboard GPU. Should I add another matching 16GB to drive a 4K monitor?

Hi @muc22611

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how important it is to get smooth performance when driving a 4K monitor, and I appreciate the thought you’ve already put into checking your memory configuration.

Let’s look at this carefully so you can make the right choice for your HP system with the AMD 780M integrated GPU.

Key Points to Consider

  • The AMD 780M integrated GPU uses shared system memory rather than dedicated video memory. This means the amount and configuration of RAM directly affects graphics performance.
  • Running in dual‑channel mode (two matching memory modules) provides higher bandwidth compared to a single strip. This can make a noticeable difference in tasks like gaming, video playback, or rendering at 4K resolution.
  • With only one 16 GB strip, your system is currently in single‑channel mode, which limits memory bandwidth for the GPU.
  • Adding another matching 16 GB strip will enable dual‑channel mode, giving the GPU more bandwidth to handle 4K output more smoothly.

Practical Guidance

  • If your workload is mainly office tasks, browsing, or video playback, 16 GB single‑channel is usually sufficient, but performance may feel less fluid at 4K.
  • If you plan to play games, edit videos, or run demanding applications on the 4K monitor, adding another 16 GB strip is strongly beneficial.
  • Always choose a module with the same speed, latency, and voltage as your existing one to ensure proper dual‑channel operation.

By adding another matching 16 GB strip, you’ll unlock dual‑channel performance, giving the AMD 780M GPU the bandwidth it needs to drive a 4K monitor more effectively.

I see you are a Hp employee. Could you point me to:

(1) How do I find out the spec on my memory module other than pull it from the socket and look at the label?

(2) Can I order one from Hp parts?

Thanks.

Thanks for replying.

I understand how important it is to match memory correctly, and I appreciate the care you’re taking before adding another module. Let’s go step by step so you can identify the exact specifications and know where to source a compatible upgrade.

1. Finding the specification of your existing memory module without removing it
You can check the details directly in Windows:

  • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  • Go to the Performance tab > Memory. This shows the speed (MHz) and form factor.
  • For more detailed information (timings, manufacturer, part number), you can use a utility like CPU‑Z or HP App diagnostics.
    • In the HP App, go to Troubleshooting & fixes > Hardware diagnostics > Memory test.
    • This will display the module’s specifications such as DDR generation (DDR4/DDR5), speed, and slots used.

2. Ordering a matching module from HP Parts
Yes, you can order genuine HP memory modules through the HP Parts Store.

  • Visit HP Parts Store.
  • Enter your product number (for example, Omnidesk with AMD 780M) in the search field.
  • The site will list compatible memory options for your exact model.

Practical tip:
When adding memory, always match:

  • DDR type (DDR4 or DDR5 depending on your system)
  • Speed (e.g., 3200 MHz or 5600 MHz)
  • Voltage (usually 1.2V for DDR4, 1.1V for DDR5)
  • Capacity (another 16 GB to pair with your existing strip)

This ensures the system runs in dual‑channel mode, giving the AMD 780M GPU the bandwidth it needs for smooth 4K performance.
